It is with great sadness that we would like you to know,  ( if you have not seen the news or recognized the name ) that Chris Straw;  our Gabriola Island alliance member, was killed in a tragic accident at his new home, building site on Tuesday.
Men killed at Gabriola were good friends, one building the other’s home
He was the president of Gabriolans Against Freighter Anchorages. He was also our unofficial leader and spokesperson for our alliance group .
This is an horrific tragedy that has stunned all of us that knew him; as a friend and colleague and especially in our fight to eliminate these anchorages. He initiated and maintained the ‘No Freighter Anchorages’ website for us all.

He had a great presence; and as such, commanded attention in a room with his abilities to communicate effectively and present our issues with authority and clarity.  He leaves a huge vacancy in our group and he will be very difficult to replace.

With sympathy for his family and friends.

Peter and  CBSWS Board.

In support of his Bill C-250, which would prohibit the anchoring of freighter vessels using coastal waters along the Southern Strait of Georgia, Alistair MacGregor recently released a video . The bill is widely supported among local stakeholders including First Nations, local government, and community activist groups.

The Vancouver Sun carried an Op Ed this morning written by  UBC Sauder Business School Professor Trevor Heaver and our own Alliance member Dr. Christoph Rhoner.

Congratulations to Christoph for all his work pulling this off. The piece makes clear that Alistair MacGregor's private members bill is not the solution and even Alistair himself has acknowledged this and has pointed out that his main purpose was to draw attention to the issue and put more pressure on the government.
